Overview

There are six special processes: welding, torquing, bonding/sealing, painting, crimping, riveting.

 

The Special Process Engineer is assigned as the coordinator for each of the special processes unless there is someone more appropriate for filling the role.  For example, a CWI will likely be assigned as the coordinator for welding. This position oversees and enforces the internal CAF requirements to ensure compliance is being met.  Special processes are those that cannot be fully verified as compliant once the work is complete, meaning only through destructive testing can the product be fully checked.  In order to ensure the proper steps are taken when these processes are performed, specific guidelines and requirements are established.  For example, personnel training, control records, environmental conditions, KPIs, etc. 

Functions and responsibilities

  • Assist managers and personnel of all departments in establishing, implementing and maintaining the requirements set in the special process standards, procedures, and instructions.
  • Prepare and maintain documentation such as reports, work instructions, trainings, etc.
  • Instruct/perform training for manufacturing personnel to quality them for each specific special process.
  • Update and maintain the lists of quality personnel for each special process
  • Refine/improve processes, procedures, work instructions, control sheets, etc. by analysis and working through the requirements step by step
  • Conduct internal audits, create reports, and assist in closure by determining root causes and implementation of proper corrective and preventive actions
  • Conduct supplier audits for either a first-time supplier approval (homologation), a renewal audit, or in-process audit to try and address a non-conformance detected.  This position is the main responsible for supplier auditing of special processes.
  • Work with the supplier to expedite root cause analysis and implementation of proper corrective action.
  • Ability to travel to supplier facilities to perform QMS audits as needed.
  • Develop training to build quality awareness
  • Oversee other people assigned as special process coordinators to assist them in understanding and implementing special process requirements.
  • Analyze standards and procedures and ensure that requirements are being met.
  • Assist in creating/maintaining documentation, such as procedures, control sheets, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or manager

Training/Education required

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in engineering or science
  • 3-5 years' experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in computer programs, such as Microsoft Office (excel is a must)
  • Strong ability to analyze and maintain objectivity
  • Strong ability and proven track record in relationship building
  • Strong in creating/developing documentation reports, procedures, control sheets, etc.

Qualitifications/Requirements

  • Ability to work in a start-up, high pressure environment
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude and create a positive culture
  • Self-motivated team player with strong interpersonal skills essential for day-to-day operations
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to speak Spanish is highly desirable
  • Lean manufacturing and/or Six Sigma certification is desirable
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

Safety Requirements

  • Shall report all injuries/illnesses to their supervisor that occur at work, the day of the incident
  • Shall report any unsafe conditions that are identified in their respective work area to supervisor
  • Shall comply with all CAF USA safety policies, procedures, and requirements
  • Shall wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required at all times
  • Shall keep their respective work area clean and orderly at all times
  • Shall attend all CAF USA required training
  • Shall NOT operate any CAF USA equipment (forklifts, cranes, scissor lifts) unless authorized

The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $70,000 to $90,000.
