Overview
The Quality Welding Inspector will perform non-destructive testing for welding, including visual inspection, magnetic particle, dye penetrant, and possibly ultrasonic. This person is also required to perform general inspections using specifications or approved criteria, dimensional inspections, water tightness, etc., as well as completing all associated documentation requirements, such as inspection records, quality control sheets (Planillas), non-conformance reports, and serialization.
Functions and responsibilities
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION:
- Welding Process Qualification: Assist the Welding Technician and/or Coordinator in the development and implementation of a comprehensive welding qualification program that follows industry standards and regulations. This includes establishing welding procedures, maintaining documentation, completing KPIs, etc.
- Quality Control: Establish and enforce quality control procedures to monitor and evaluate welding processes, ensuring adherence to specifications, codes, and standards.
- Perform NDT inspections, primarily VT, MT, and PT.
- Perform Dimensional inspections.
- Review modifications implemented by production to validate work and close in BAAN.
- Prepare inspection reports and non-conformance reports for issues found in production. This requires the use of programs such as BAAN, CHELI, Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.
- Work directly with production to drive improvements and reduce the number of discontinuities/defects detected.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Process Improvement: Continuously improve welding processes by analyzing data, identifying trends, and implementing corrective actions. Collaborate with engineering, production, and other departments to optimize weld quality, productivity, and efficiency.
- Compliance and Documentation: Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, industry standards, and customer specifications related to welding. Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation, including inspection reports and quality records.
- Problem Solving and Troubleshooting: Investigate and resolve welding-related issues, non-conformities, and customer complaints. Utilize root cause analysis and other problem-solving techniques to implement effective corrective and preventive actions.
Training required
- High school diploma or equivalency. A two-year technical degree is preferred.
- Extensive experience in welding processes and procedures, preferably in a manufacturing environment related to passenger rail car production.
- Strong knowledge of welding and NDT codes and standards (e.g., AWS D1.1, D1.3, D1.6, ASME Section IX, ASNT-TC-1A).
- Familiarity with non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques and procedures. Preferably with previous or current Level II certification (MT, PT, UT).
- AWS CWI is desirable
- Strong understanding of quality management systems and continuous improvement methodologies.

- Shall comply with all CAF USA safety policies, procedures, and requirements
- Shall wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required at all times
- Shall keep their respective work area clean and orderly at all times
- Shall attend all CAF USA required training
- Shall NOT operate any CAF USA equipment (forklifts, cranes, scissor lifts, etc.) unless authorized

The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $25.00 to $35.00 per hour.
