Overview
The Mechanical Engineer in CAF US will act as a technical front face with the US customers for the definition and implementation of all mechanical aspects of the vehicle including carbody, trucks, doors and loading, coupling, and interiors. Engaging customer and tender/project development needs to help the company to deliver a design that fulfills the contract on time and within budget. Work as a liaison between CAF HQ Engineering Team, CAF USA Team and the tender/project/product activities to ensure customer satisfaction while achieving target metrics.
Functions and responsibilities
- To develop the mechanical areas of the vehicle such as the body shell, bogie, finishing, installations, for the project/tender/product working closely with the US Engineering Team and the Engineering Department in the Company Headquarters.
- To verify and validate the vehicle mechanical issues together with the US Engineering Team and the Engineering Department in the Company Headquarters.
- Plan and develop the engineering activities related to mechanical issues, its verification and validation with the CAF US engineering Team and the Engineering Department at HQ.
- Represent CAF, together with the rest of the CAF US Engineering Team and the support of the Engineering Team from the HQ, at the regular project/tender/product meetings about mechanical issues with the customer, and the rest of project/tender stakeholders in US.
- Conduct a dialog with the client in coordination with the Engineering Team at HQ and TPMs, regarding the implementation of the Project in time and form.
- Support the impact assessment (time/cost/quality) of possible risks, opportunities and variations in the project.
- Maximize the use of standardized solutions for the different projects/tenders.
- Review design solutions that are under design, revisit contractual requirements, applicable standards, to crosscheck the correct definition of these solutions.
- Active participation in the functional definition and revision process of the corresponding system, with customers and suppliers.
- Completing necessary documentation including technical descriptions, CAD drawings/drafting, stress analysis, change requirements and modifications prioritizing accuracy and on-time delivery.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or manager
Training/education required
- Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Mechanical/Mechatronics Engineering
- Minimum 3-5 years of proven experience in railway rolling stock functional definition, either new build or refurbishment
- Knowledge in the US Railway sector and Approval process
- Knowledge in worldwide standards related with railways will be favourably considered, such as but not limited to: EN45545, EN61373, ASME RT-2, RT-1, APTA PR-CS-S-011-99, MIL-HDBK-759, SAE J287, SAE J1050, SAE J1139, SAE J1517, and SAEJ1522.
Required professional experience
- Very good interpersonal and organizational skills, open minded, excellent abilities for teamwork, proactivity, proven level of autonomy
- Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written, is mandatory
- Strong IT skills with Microsoft Suite, Excel, Word, Outlook, PPT, Microsoft Project.
- Being familiar with tools such as DOORs, CATIA, 3DExperience, TRELLO, and Program Planner
- Spanish will be very favorably considered
- Will be sited in CAF’s Boston Engineering Site and will need to be available to travel to CAF Headquarters and along the US for the possible projects/tenders.
Safety Requirements
- Shall report all injuries/illnesses to their supervisor that occur at work, the day of the incident
- Shall report any unsafe conditions that are identified in their respective work area to their supervisor
- Shall comply with all CAF USA safety policies, procedures, and requirements that are communicated to them, including Job Safety Analysis (JSA) procedures
- Shall wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that is communicated and supplied to them
- Shall attend all CAF USA required training as soon as possible before the start of their assigned work
- Shall NOT operate any CAF USA equipment (forklifts, cranes, scissor lifts) until certified to do so

The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $140,000 to $160,000.
